Martyrs Memorial (Rayleigh)
The Martyrs Memorial is an interesting feature in the busy Essex town of Rayleigh.
Situated in the High Street, opposite the Crown Hotel, it takes the form of an obelisk.
The memorial records the two Protestants who were burnt at the stake in Rayleigh during Queen Mary's reign in the 16th century.
It also records the two clergymen from the area who were executed in a similar manner at Smithfield in London.
The memorial was erected in the early 20th century.
