Square Tower (Portsmouth)
The Square Tower is one of the defences of the outstanding old maritime ciy of Portsmouth.
It stands at one end of what are known as the Hot Walls, providing protection from attack from the sea. At the other end is the older Round Tower.
The 17th century Square Tower is, in fact, at the seaward end of the High Street, and close to Portsmouth Cathedral (Anglican).
On the North face of the tower, facing the High Street, is a bust of Charles I.
The tower has been used for various purposes. Originally the residence of Portsmouth's Military Governor, it later served as a magazine, a meat store, a semaphore signalling station and an armed defence post.
