Penrhyn Castle (Penrhyn)

Penrhyn Castle is an opulent fantasy castle at Penrhyn near Bangor in North Wales.

It was dramatically built in a neo-Norman style by Thomas Hopper between 1820 and 1845, for the wealthy Pennant family, who made their fortune from Jamaican sugar and Welsh slate, not to mention the slave trade.

Among the fascinating exhibits is a one-ton bed made of slate for Queen Victoria.

During the Second World War, some of the paintings from the National Gallery were transferred here for safe keeping.

The castle is now in the care of the National Trust.
