Covered Market (Oxford)
The Covered Market is a very useful feature of the ancient university city of Oxford.
It is actually one of the oldest covered markets in Britain, having been opened in 1773.
There are entrances in The High (the local name for the High Street), as well as in Market Street and the pedestrianised Cornmarket Street.
The food here is celebrated for its excellence, and particularly for its poultry and game, while the locally made sausages are splendid.
But also in the lanes of the market one can find all manner of things, such as books, china, clothes, craftware, jewellery, and luggage, and there are also cafes.
Next door to the Covered Market is the Mitre Hotel, with vaulted cellars dating back to the 13th century.
