Norwich Castle (Norwich)

Norwich Castle, with its great stone keep, stands on a mound in the centre of the city and dominates the area, as was the original intention.

The castle was built by William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman Conquest, when Norwich was one of the largest towns in England. A hundred houses were pulled down to make way for the castle.

Henry I added the 70 foot tower in the early 12th century, with its blank arcading, refaced in 1834 by the architect Anthony Salvin.

It is now part of the Norwich Castle Museum, whose collection includes work by the Norwich School of artists, including John Crome and John Sell Cotman.

Today, there is a first-class indoor shopping centre beneath the castle.
