Montgomery Castle (Montgomery)

Montgomery Castle is a fascinating ruin at Montgomery in Wales.

It was built to replace Hen Domen Castle, the remains of which can still be seen near the former railway station.

Montgomery Castle was constructed in the late 11th century by Baldwin de Boller, on a hill overlooking the town and the River Severn, and was one of many border castles.

It was enlarged in 1223 and became the home of the Herbert family. In 1622 Lord Herbert of Chirbury, brother of the poet and hymn writer George Herbert, built a mansion within the castle walls.

The castle was demolished by order of Parliament in 1649.

Montgomery Castle is now in the care of Cadw.
