Manchester Cathedral (Manchester)

The Cathedral of St. Mary is the cathedral serving the major city of Manchester.

Formerly the collegiate church of St. Mary the Virgin, St. George and St. Denis, it was raised to cathedral status when the diocese was founded in 1847.

The cathedral stands in the heart of the old town of Manchester, very close to the modern shopping centre.

Standing on the site of an earlier church, it was started in 1421.

So many chantry chapels were added during the 15th century that the nave is broader than it is long, and is the widest nave in England.

There are very fine choir stalls and a small Lady Chapel.
