Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages (Maidstone)

The Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages is a splendid specialised museum in Maidstone.

It is situated in Mill Street.

The building is historic in its own right, being the 14th century stables of the Archbishop`s Palace.

The collection is surprisingly varied. There are landaus, phaetons, broughams, gigs, many of them used by the nobility and some by Royalty.

In addition, there are smaller carriages, including biers and playthings for children.

Most of the carriages are 19th century, while the oldest was made in the 1670s and comes from Italy.
