Our Lady and St. Nicholas Church (Liverpool)

Our Lady and St. Nicholas is the parish church of Liverpool.

It is situated in Chapel Street, not far from the Pier Head.

The church dates from the 13th century, but most of the structure is considerably later.

For centuries, Our Lady and St. Nicholas was merely the parish church of a small village on the shores of the River Mersey, but it grew in importance with the rise of Liverpool as a major seaport. From then on it was known far and wide as "the sailors' church".

A disaster occurred in 1810, when the old tower fell, killing 25 worshippers. It was replaced in 1815.

During the Second World War, the nave was destroyed by enemy action, and this was rebuilt during the 1950s.
