The Stonebow (Lincoln)

The Stonebow is a massive gateway in the modern heart of the ancient cathedral city of Lincoln.

It is situated in the High Street, and marks the Southern entrance to the old town, being on the site of a Roman gateway and a mediaeval one. The present structure was built in the 15th century.

Above the Stonebow are the council chambers and the Guildhall. Among the regalia kept here are swords belonging to Richard II and Henry VII.

There has been a Mayor of Lincoln since 1206. The Mayoralty is thus one of the oldest in England.

A bell, dated 1371, is still rung to call council meetings.
