Dr. Johnsons Birthplace (Lichfield)
Dr. Johnsons Birthplace is one of the best known features of the small city of Lichfield in Staffordshire.
It stands in the Market Place, on the corner of Breadmarket Street.
The house was built by the bookseller Michael Johnson in 1707, and it was here that his son, the great Dr. Samuel Johnson, was born in 1709.
The house remains virtually unaltered from Dr. Johnsons time, and is now a museum of his life and times, with many books and manuscripts.
Outside in the Market Place are statues of Johnson and his biographer James Boswell.
