St. John`s Church (Leeds (Yorkshire))
St. John`s Church is a fascinating church in Leeds (Yorkshire).
It is situated just off the Headrow in the City Centre.
The church was funded by the local cloth merchant and philanthropist John Harrison and it was built between 1632 and 1634 as a response to the overcrowding of the original parish church, St. Peter`s, as Leeds was growing.
By the 1860s, St. John`s was becoming redundant, and a number of prominent architects, including George Gilbert Scott, campaigned succeessfully to stop its demolition.
It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
