St. Edmund and St. Mary Church (Ingatestone)

St. Edmund and St. Mary Church is the parish church of Ingatestone in Essex.

It dates back in part to the Norman period.

The magnificent West tower is of red brick with black diaper work/ It is very tall, and has stepped battlements.

The North wall of the nave is Norman, and contains puddingstone and recycled Roman brick.The font is Perpendicular and octagonal.

There is a fine collection of monuments to the Petrie family, including Sir William Petrie, who was Secretary of State to Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I, as well as being a Privy Councillor. He died in 1572.
