Herne Windmill (Herne Bay)

Herne Windmill is a picturesque feature of Herne Bay.

It is situated in Mill Lane, in the original village of Herne, a little inland.

The windmill is a smock mill, and was built in 1789. It was woked by wind power until 1952, and then by electricity until 1980.

A good proportion of the original machinery is still in place, and some of it is run for demonstration. The sails are used when wind conditions permit.
