Coningsby Hospital (Hereford)
Coningsby Hospital is a historic building in the ancient cathedral city of Hereford.
It is situated in Widemarsh Street.
Outside the walls of Hereford stood a Dominican friary, and beside it a property belonging to the Knights of St. John.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, both properties passed to Sir Thomas Coningsby of Hereford. In 1614, he adapted the Order`s buildings to create a hospital and almshouses, which still function today.
It includes the rare arrangement where those in the infirmary could look down into the chapel, to hear Mass. This is similar to the arrangement at St. Marys Hospital at Chichester.
There is now a small museum in the infirmary.
