Shipwreck Heritage Centre (Hastings)
The Shipwreck Heritage Centre is one of a number of maritime-based attractions in the Sussex resort of Hastings.
It shows the work achieved by marine archaeologists in a manner that is quite fascinating.
The oldest exhibits come from a ship of the Roman period, which apparently sank while bringing a cargo of stone to London. Some nails and the ribs survive, giving an insight into the ship`s construction techniques.
There are some finds from the "Amsterdam", a Dutch East India Company cargo ship which foundered on Hastings beach in 1749. At low tide, her remains can still be seen off St. Leonards.
There is also a Victorian river barge.
