Hastings Pier (Hastings)

Hastings Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.

It is situated at Hastings on the South coast, pointing out into the English Channel.

Designed by the pier specialist Eugenius Birch, Hastings Pier was opened on 5th August 1872, Britain`s first Bank Holiday.

In 1885, a landing stage was added, so that trippers could arrive by steamer.

The pier was used by the military during the Second World War, and was reopened to the public in 1946.

In 1966, a special building was ceated to create the Hastings Embriodery, celebrating the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, and in 1976 the pier structure was listed.

But the pier was closed in 1999, reopened and then sadly closed again in 2006.
