St. Hilda`s Church (Hartlepool)
St. Hilda`s Church is the parish church of the old town of Hartlepool in County Durham.
Dating from the 13th century, it is on the site of a 7th century religious house founded from Lindisfarne. St. Hilda was the abbess here before she moved to Whitby Abbey.
The church was refounded by the Bruce family in the Early Gothic style.
It sits in an extensive churchyard on the headland, with views across the old town and out to sea.
There is an enormousWest tower and a graceful nave.
The Bruce family mausoleum was rebuilt by Caroe in the 1920s.
