Wellington Pier (Great Yarmouth)

Wellington Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institiution.

It is situated on the North Sea coast in the Norfolk seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, and is one of two piers in the town, the other being Britannia Pier.

Wellington Pier originally opened in 1853, and was named in honour of the Duke of Wellington. Its length was 700 feet, including a 100 foot landing stage.

In 1900, the council purchased the pier and decided to rebuilt it in the Arts and Crafts style. With the addition of a Bandstand, and Winter Gardens moved from Torquay, the new complex opened in 1903.

The building was listed by the Department of the Environment as being of outstanding architectural and historical interest in 1974.

After a period when the comedian Jim Davidson ran the pier, a major facelift was announced in 2003.
