Tolhouse (Great Yarmouth)

The Tolhouse is a historic building in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

It is situated in Tolhouse Street in the Old Town.

The Tolhouse was built in the 13th century, and can claim to be one of the oldest civic buildings in the country. Over the years it acted as the town court and the gaol.

The Great Hall was known as the Heightening Chamber, where Great Yarmouth`s corporation met to fix the price of herring. The significance of "heightening" is that the price always went up, never down.

Today, the Tolhouse is a museum relating the town`s long and varied history.
