Nelson`s Monument (Great Yarmouth)
Nelson`s Monument is a striking feature of Great Yarmouth.
Also known as the Norfolk Pillar, it is a Grade I listed monument, and was built in 819.
Designed by the eminent architect William Wilkins, it was the first monument in England to Admiral Lord Nelson, as the more famous Nelson`s Column in London dates from 1843.
It is a fluted Greek Doric column on a square pedestal, which in turn stands on a raised plinth. The column is surmounted by a figure of Britannia supported by Caryatids.
The column rises to 144 feet, and there are 217 steps.
