St. John`s Church (Glastonbury)

St. John`s Church is the parish church of Glastonbury in Somerset, a town which, even when the absurd accretions have been stripped away, is still a place of great antiquity and sanctity.

Standing in the centre of the town, but until the 19th century behind a row of houses, it has a splendid tower surmounted by a crown. St. John`s dates from the 15th century.

In the North chancel window is a coherent reassembly of 15th century glass.

There are two very large modern statues at the West end. One is of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the other of the risen Christ. They were both scupted by the German Ernst Blensdorf, who fled to Somerset in 1933 after all his work had been destroyed by the Nazis.

An ancient tomb in the church was believed to be that of Joseph of Arimathea.
