Glastonbury Tor (Glastonbury)
Glastonbury Tor is a famous landmark at Glastonbury in Somerset.
It is a natural hill, which rises out of the flat land known as the Somerset Levels, formerly an inland sea, and rises to 521 feet. The summit offers spectacular views ovr Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire.
The Tor features in much of the mysticism, Christian and othrwise, which permeates the whole area of Glastonbury.
Excavations have revealed the plans of two superimposed churches, both dedicated to St. Michael. This is not uncommon with hilltop sites, St. Michael being said to have defeated the dragon, representing the earlier religion.
Only the church tower remains, and this adds to the familiar scene.
Glastonbury Tor is now in the care of the National Trust.
