St. Marys Church (Dedham)

St. Marys is the parish church of the delightful little town of Dedham in Essex, near the border with Suffolk.

It is situated in the High Street, but with the other side still facing open fields.

The building was begun in the 15th century, and was virtually complete by the mid 16th. It was financed by the woollen manufacturers Thomas Webbe and his son John.

The West tower is of knapped flint, has pinnacles, and rises to 130 feet.

This is the church that appears in a number of paintings by the celebrated local man John Constable.

The forger and accomplished painter Tom Keating is buried in the churchyard.
