St. John the Baptist Church (Danbury)

St. John the Baptist Church is the parish church of the attractive village of Danbury in Essex.

It is situated among trees in an oval earthwork at the top of the hill, with wide views across the valleys of the Blackwater and the Crouch.

Parts of the church date back to about 1300, and most is 14th century, including the splendid West tower.

There is a gallery in the tower arch, that dates from about 1600.

It is a very wide church, the nave and aisles being wider than they are long.

The most remarkable and celebrated feature of this church is the three oak effigies of knights, all cross legged and all different. They date from around 1300.
