Chirk Castle (Chirk)

Chirk Castle is a historic building outside the little Welsh town of Chirk, on the border with England.

There was already a castle here when Roger Mortimer was granted the land by Edward I. Mortimer built a new castle between 1274 and 1310, incorporating some of the original building.

Towards the end of the Civil War, Chirk Castle was badly damaged by a cannon bombardment, and repaired after the Restoration.

There was a considerable amount of work carried out by Augustus Pugin in the 19th century.

Offa`s Dyke runs through the castle`s parkland.

Chirk Castle remains one of the few inhabited castles in Wales, having been continuously occuped since it was built.
