Castle Acre Castle (Castle Acre)
Castle Acre Castle is a very impressive castle site at Castle Acre in Norfolk.
The castle, along with the village and priory, was founded by William de Warrenne, Earl of Surrey, in the 11th century, at the point where the ancient Peddars Way crosses the River Nar.
The grass covered ramparts are stupendous, and most probably the finest in England. The site comprised a motte and bailey, with a horseshoe shaped moat.
The North Gate still stands, at the top of Bailey Street, and is used by traffic coming into the village.
The castle has remained a ruin since de Warrenne`s family died out in 1347.
The site is in the care of English Heritage.
