Castle Mound (Cambridge)
The Castle Mound is a most impressive, but surprisingly little known, feature of the cathedral city of Cambridge.
It can be found on the opposite side of the River Cam from the city centre, a little further out than Magdalene College.
The Norman castle was built in 1068, just after the Conquest, but was destroyed by the forces of Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War.
The enormous motte stands beside the County Council offices.
