St. Eadburghas Church (Broadway)
St. Eadburghas is the ancient parish church of Broadway in Worcestershire.
There is a church in the centre of the village, but St. Eadburghas is a mile away, along a lane that leads to Snowshill. It makes a very pleasant walk.
The church's odd position is explained by the fact that it was the original site of the village, on what was in mediaeval times the equivalent of a main road.
In the 15th century the village moved to its present position in the wake of a new road being established.
The exterior of the church is largely Perpendicular, and the shape is cruciform, with a crossing tower.
On top of the Cotswold stone walls are tiles from Collyweston, and the gravestones in the churchyard are well encrusted with lichen.
There are Norman arcades, pulpit and choir stalls recycled from 14th century benches, and a Jacobean altar rail.
Overall, the church is very gentle, and quietly welcoming to any who care to walk that mile.
There is a tradition that St. Eadburgha, the grand daughter of King Alfred, lived locally.
