Lord Mayor`s Chapel (Bristol)

The Lord Mayor`s Chapel is one of the interesting places of worship in Bristol.

Dedicated to St. Mark, it has a tiny West front which is not normally noticed, being sandwiched between later buildings, and with a tower at the back. It is situated across College Green from Bristol Cathedral.

Originally, this was the chapel of local almshouses, but was bought by Bristol Corporation after the Dissolution and is now the only church in England that is owned by a local authority.

The nave roof is Perpendicular, with bosses picked out in gold. In the nave and the South chapel are many memorials to local worthies.

The lovely Poyntz Chapel was built by Sir Robert Poyntz, who died in 1520, and is set aside for quiet contemplation.
