Palace Pier (Brighton)

Palace Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.

It is situated on the South coast at the major resort of Brighton, pointing out into the English Channel, and is one of England`s most popular piers.

Brighton at one time had three piers. Chain Pier was lost many years ago, but it is hoped that West Pier can be resored.

West Pier was first opened in 1899 with a length of 1060 feet. Construction work continued, however, and the completed length was 1760 feet.

The Pier Head Theatre was opened in 1901, and further improvements included a central windbreak.

It was closed during the Second World War but reopened in 1946, and continues to function as a very popular pier.
