Bridgnorth Castle (Bridgnorth)

Bridgnorth Castle is a fascinating ruin in the Shropshire town of Bridgnorth.

It stands on the edge of the cliff overlooking the River Severn, and can be reached from the town centre along West Castle Street, past St. Mary`s Church.

The castle was first built in the 11th century by Earl Robert de Belleme, who was a supporter of Robert of Normandy, brother of Henry I.

The keep was added by Henry II, and chroniclers wrote that it was erected "in a great hurrey". It was at Bridgnorth that Edward II was captured by Roger Mortimer.

During the Civil War Bridgnorth Castle was held for the king and it was besieged for three weeks in 1646.

Afterwards, it was slighted, leaving the remains of the keep standingat its extraordinary angle of 17 degrees, much greater than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
