Borley Church (Borley)

Borley Church is of course the parish church of the tiny Essex village of Borley, close to the border with Suffolk.

It is simply known as Borley Church because its original dedication is unknown.

There is an excellent, though rather gloomy, topiary walk leading to the porch.

The nave dates back to the 11th century, while the chancel, made of brick, is from the Tudor period and the tower is 15th century.

On the floor is a black marble slab, commemorating Humphrey Burrough, Rectory of Borley, who died in 1757. He was he uncle of the painter Thomas Gainsborough, who came from nearby Sudbury.
