Bodmin Gaol (Bodmin)

Bodmin Gaol is an important building at Bodmin in Cornwall.

It is situated in Berrycombe Road.

There had been an early prison here from the 1770s, but the newer one, with better conditions, was proposed by prison reformer John Howard.

The naval prison at Devonport was moved to Bodmin in 1887.

The prison was closed in 1916, and the prison buildings were sold for demolition in 1929. Most of the roof slates were removed, but the granite walls are so strong that they have resisted all attempts to knock, or blow, them down.
