St. Aidan`s Church (Bamburgh)
St. Aidan`s Church is the parish church of the Northumberland village of Bamburgh.
It stands at the opposite end of the village to the famous Bamburgh Castle.
The chancel is particularly long and impressive.
The heroine Grace Darling is buried here, and there is a memorial effigy in the North aisle.
A modern electric lamp, enclosing a cross, has a plaque stating that St. Aidan died on this spot in 651.
Under the chancel is a 13th century crypt, which may have originally contained relics of St. Aidan.
There was formerly an Augustinian monastery on the site.
