Windermere
Windermere is a town in Cumbria, 7 miles from Kendal.
There was originally a village named Birthwaite here, until the Kendal and Windermere Railway was built in 1847, with its terminus in the village. The railway company changed the station name to Windermere, although the lake is a mile away.
Windermere is now a busy town, but the tourist centre is at nearby Bowness-on-Windermere.
Arthur Ransome wrote "Swallows and Amazons" at Windermere.
