Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay is a seaside resort in Tyne and Wear, formerly Northumberland, 2 miles from Tynemouth.
It grew from the village of Whitley in the 19th century, and acquired the "Bay" suffix because of confusion with Whitby in Yorkshire.
The old fishing village of Cullercoats is now effectively a part of Whitley Bay.
St. Mary`s Island can be reached by a short causeway, and was once used by smugglers. On the island is St. Mary`s lighthouse.
