Stonehenge

Stonehenge is an important prehistoric site in Wiltshire, 2 miles from Amesbury on Salisbury Plain.

It is the most famous prehistoric monument in Britain, and instantly recognisable in photographs.

Stonehenge is a ring of enormous sarsen stones 13 feet high. Some of the stones carry other stones across their tops.

Inside this ring there is another circle of smaller stones and more huge sarsens in the centre.

Some of the stones were transported from the Prescelly Hills in South Wales.

The monument was started 5000 years ago, and was added to several times.

The purpose of Stonehenge is not known, but it is generally believed to be of a religious nature (not involving the Druids, who came much later).

Stonehenge is in the care of English Heritage.
