Robin Hood`s Bay
Robin Hood`s Bay is a small coastal town in Yorkshire, 5 miles from Whitby. There is a sandy beach beneath the lofty cliffs at low tide.
Generally regarded as one of the most picturesque coastal communities, it is a jumble of cobbled slopes, narrow alleyways and flights of steps tumbling down a steep cliff from which vehicular traffic is necessarily excluded.
A major industry here in the 18th and 19th centuries was smuggling.
According to local tradition, Robin Hood came here to get boats ready for a planned escape to the Continent. The name of the town is first recorded in 1532.
A 19th century shipwreck saw the Whitby lifeboat dragged overland to Robin Hood`s Bay in the snow.
