Portree

Portree is the main commercial and administrative centre on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, 10 miles from Sligachan.

It is situated on the Eastern coast of the island, on the little natural harbour known as Loch Portree which opens out onto the Sound of Raasay.

The name "Portree" means King`s port, and refers to the visit of James V in 1540, when he attempted to win the allegiance of the Lord of the Isles.

The Royal Hotel contains the room where in 1745 Charles Edward Stuart took his leave of Flora McDonald, having fled with her "over the sea to Skye".
