Leiston

Leiston is a small town in Suffolk, 4 miles from Saxmundham.

Leiston Abbey, just outside the town, was a Praemonstratensian house dating from the 14th century. It is now in ruins and in the care of English Heritage, while part became a Diocesan retreat in 1953.

The Garrett engineering family produced, among others, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, who became not only England`s first woman doctor but also England`s first woman mayor (of nearby Aldeburgh).

Close to Leiston are the enormous Sizewell power stations.
