Layer Marney
Layer Marney is a village in Essex, 6 miles from Colchester.
Layer Marney Tower is the gatehouse of what was to be a enormous mansion, which was never completed. Lord Marney, one of Henry VIII`s senior ministers, built this in the 1520s, but died soon after, followed not long after by his son, extinguishing the family line. The gatehouse has four tall brick towers, eight storeys high, and is the tallest Tudor gatehouse in England.
St. Mary`s Church, adjacent, was rebuilt in brick by Lord Marney at the same time, and contains Marney tombs, as well as a wall painting of St. Christopher.
