Elstow

Elstow is a picturesque village in Bedfordshire, 2 miles from Bedford, of which it is virtually now a suburb.

It was the birthplace of John Bunyan, and some of the scenes from "The Pilgrim`s Progress" seem to be inspired by the village.

The huge St. Mary and St. Helen Church is a fragment of the Norman Elstow Abbey, founded by the sister of William the Conqueror. Some remains, including part of the cloisters, can be seen. Bunyan was baptised in the font. The church has a detached bell tower.

The timber framed Moot Hall dates from about 1500 and stands on the Village Green.

There are several timber framed and jettied houses in the main street.
