Dunoon

Dunoon is a small coastal resort on the Firth of Clyde, 2 miles from Sandbank.

Situated on the Cowal peninsula, it is reached by trippers from Glasgow by ferry from Gourock, and reached the height of its popularity in the 19th century.

Dunoon Castle, now ruined, dates from the 13th century and was one of the strongholds of the Clan Campbell.

There is a much loved statue of Robert Burns` Highland Mary, the tragic Mary Campbell.

Cowal Highland Gathering is one of the largest in Scotland.

The politician Virginia Bottomley was born at Dunoon.
