Carrawburgh

Carrawburgh is a Roman site in Northumberland, 4 miles from Chollerford, and beside General Wade`s military road.

The fort, known as Procolitia, was built across the vallum, the ditch that ran alongside Hadrian`s Wall. Extensive earthworks survive.

Beside the fort are the well preserved remains of a 3rd century temple of Mithras, discovered in 1950.

There was also a well, dedicated to the nymph Coventina.
