Blaenau Ffestiniog
Blaenau Ffestiniog is a small town in North Wales, on the edge of Snowdonia.
Along with Llanberis, it was one of the major centres of the slate quarrying industry, the effects of which still dominate the landscape.
Two former slate mines can be visited - Gloddfa Ganol and Llechwedd.
The narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway was created in the 19th century to transport slate 13 miles to the harbour town of Porthmadog. It still operates the same journey, but is now a very popular tourist attraction.
