Whitby and Captain Cook Country (A Coach Trip in Yorkshire)
"Whitby and Captain Cook Country" is one of the very popular Coach Trips devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Coplin Crosby Heritage Tours.
These trips are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.
It is a tour around the part of Yorkshire heavily associated with the famous mariner Captain Cook, and with which he would be familiar.
The coach leaves St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester City Centre at 8am, and is expected back about 9pm.
Colin gives his commentary along the way as usual, pointing out places of interest and telling their stories in a way that makes his excursions quite unique.
There are three stops, of about an hour each.
Marton is the hamlet where James Cook was born, and is now within a beautiful country park near Middlesbrough. There is an excellent Visitor Centre with a museum devoted to the great man.
Staithes is a little town on the coast between great cliffs, and is where Cook worked as a young man. It is reminiscent of Cornish villages like Polperro and Mevagissey.
Whitby is a fine town in many ways, famous as a seaside resort and whaling port, as well as for its great Abbey and connections with Count Dracula. It was at Whitby that Cook was apprenticed and started his career in earnest.
