Street Names of Loughborough (A Guided Walk in Loughborough)
"Street Names of Loughborough" is a Guided Walk in Loughborough, devised and led by the well known Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby.
The walk starts in the Market Place, beside the Fearon Fountain.
Louhborough has an interesting collection of street names, many of which have origins in the fact that this part of England was under Danish occupation over a thousand yers ago.
The town shares this with a number of other places in the East Midlands, notably Leicester, Derby, Nottingham and Newark.
Newcomers to Loughborough always comment on the number of streets which contain the word "Gate", and ask whether there really were that number of gateways into the town. The answer is no, but the true meaning is revealed on the walk.
There are also a couple of major thoroughfares which change their names frequently.
Leicester Road in the South becomes Derby Road in the North, but has another three names in between.
And the street leading through the Market Place out towards Charnwood Forest changes its name several times.
