Ironbridge Gorge Tour (A Coach Trip in Ironbridge)
The “Ironbridge Gorge Tour” is one of the many Coach Trips devised and led by Colin Crosby, pf Colin Crosby Heritage Tours, the well known Blue Badge Guide.
These trips are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.
It is a Sunday afternoon excursion, allowing those who do something else on a Sunday morning (notably, of course, going to church) to do both. Also, public transport on a Sunday gets more frequent as the morning progresses.
The tour is around the Ironbridge area beside the River Severn in Shropshire, which was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. The gorge itself is very beautiful, but would have given a very different impression in the 18th century.
The coach leaves St. Margarets Bus Station in the centre of Leicester at 1pm, and returns about 8pm.
Colin gives his usual commentary along the way, pointing out places of interest that can be seen from the coach, and giving some background to their history.
There is a stop for a couple of hours during the afternoon at Ironbridge, where the actual iron bridge itself was the world’s first to be made of cast iron, by Abraham Darby III in 1779. This beautiful structure can still be used by pedestrians.
There are cafes and refreshment rooms at Ironbridge.
