Weekend in the North East
My wife Anne and I spent a weekend in the North East recently, staying with our son Kevin and his fiancee Laura in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
We travelled up from Leicester on the Thursday, as Anne needed to visit an ecclesiastical tailors. While she was doing that, I paid a visit to Newcastle Catholic Cathedral. While waiting for Kevin and Laura to finish work, we had a stroll around, visiting Newcastle-upon-Tyne Cathedral and Bessie Surtees House.
On the Friday, we went to Monkwearmouth and visited the Anglo-Saxon church, followed by the National Glass Centre. Afterwards we had a brief look at Sunderland, and popped into Sunderland Minster.
We all went out on the Saturday for a tour. We visited Ponteland, Kirkharle and Rothbury, and spent a couple of hours in Alnwick, including a visit to the extraordinary Barter Books in the Old Station.
On the Sunday morning we visited the gigantic Metro Centre at Gateshead, before returning to Leicester.
It was a nice weekend.
